We do hope you have a nice and memorable stay in this former ancient city of Angkor. This small leaflet gives you some information about the Catholic community and its activities in this province.
In Siem Reap city, we have a small chapel, which is located by the Siem Reap River; near Grand Hotel d´Angkor (see the map).
It is not a big building as you might imagine, but it is only a house that since 1998 has been used by the Catholic community as its center of activities, like Masses, recollection, meetings, catechism etc.
There are about 35 families consisting about 150 people, most of them are Cambodians. Among them are some expatriates working and living in Siem Reap. The patron saint of the church is St. John, the Apostle.
As the needs increase and more people join our activities, we have decided to build a bigger chapel for our community. This new chapel which hopefully can welcome at least 200 people will be built just beside our present chapel. Help us with your prayers and your support so that we can make our dream come true.
We have another church which is located in Chong Khnies, the floating village on the Great Tonle Sap Lake. There are about 10 families, comprising about 60 people, most of them are of Vietnamese origin and earn their living by fishing. The patron saint of this church is St Peter, the Fisherman. Just next to the church we have a house for our activities like Literacy Class for children, catechism, different kinds of meetings etc.
Our mission (Top)
"Yahweh has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up hearts that are broken, to proclaim liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the favor from Yahweh" (Is 61: 1-2)
The mission of Jesus quoted above is also our mission and is very relevant to us here in Cambodia, a country destroyed by civil war for over 20 years which has left wounds in the hearts of most Khmer people. Because of the war, social institutions were torn apart. Trust and confidence in one another were often lost.
Even long after the war is over, there are still so many landmines in Cambodian soil causing new casualties every year. Suffering and poverty can be seen in many places.
We are here, united with all men of good will to help to restore life, and to become witnesses that the force of love and life is stronger than the force of hatred and death, that God our heavenly Father loves every one in spite of the sins, the wounds, the sufferings and the broken hearts. We are here to proclaim this good news essentially by our lives, by our attitudes, our activities, our services, our love for the poor and the disabled, through our prayers and sometimes through our words. By our presence and our service, we want to give the people a possibility to experience the love of Jesus the Lord and the Savior of mankind.
Our Priorities (Top)
1. Offering the people the possibility to experience the faith and love of Jesus.
2. Deepening and strengthening the faith of the Catholic communities with special attention to the children and the youth.
3. Service to the poor and the needy.
4. Promoting Cambodian art and cultures.
5. Promoting and facilitating inter-religious cooperation and dialog.
6. Work of reconciliation and justice.
Our Service (Top)
Besides our regular service, that includes catechism, liturgical celebration and charity service, we also offer the following service:
1. Dance practice of children and youth.
2. Literacy class for children
3. School assistance, especially for elementary school students.
4. Basic hygienic education for children and adults.
5. Regular children gathering to promote friendship and solidarity among them.
6. Visiting the sick, the poor and the needy and giving them some emergency help.
7. Community education on relevant topics.
We are small in number. Our service is tiny compared to the enormous problems and suffering we have in Cambodia. Yet in cooperation with so many people of good will, we become God’s instruments to bring His healing love, His joy and His peace to the people of this beautiful country. Will you join us?
Besides these two chapels, in cooperation with Sisters of the infant-Jesus of Chauffailles, we also run a learning center for children called META KARUNA CENTRE, which is located in Phnom Krom, some ten kilometers from Siem Reap. In this center we have the following activities:
Pre-school program for children
Nutrition program for children
Basic hygienic education for children
English courses for children
Dance practice for children
Advocacy program for adults and parents
Literacy class for adults
Programs for children in Siem Reap (Top)
There are so many children in Cambodia. Most of the children in the parish are very poor. They can be helped in various ways. Because the present children will be very important in the future, ministry for children is one of the priorities of the Catholic Church of Siem Reap.
